Injection Mold Tips, Techniques and Tools

Plastic parts are used just about everywhere. So it is surprising the limited amount of real information provided to or used in the complete process of manufacturing plastic parts.

The design of the plastic part is very important. It must meet the requirements of the final assembled item. This includes of course its function, strength, looks and cost. Some parts are designed by experts in plastics, but often plastic parts are designed by persons with experience in the other aspects of the final assembled product. They see the part as just one small part of their product, and not much of a big deal. Unfortunately, sometimes this results in a part that has had significant cost incurred without the desired result: A good plastic part.

The choice of a plastic type for the part effects many decisions in the production of the final part. The cost of the plastic is only one factor. Changing the plastic late in the game plan can result in re-manufacturing the injection mold and adding considerable cost to the project.

The design of the injection mold tooling is more important than the actual construction of the injection mold. If the tool is designed inadequately, no amount of mold maker expertise will be able to overcome a faulty design. In the same vein, a poor design of the plastic part can not be made whole by a great mold design.

An excellent injection molder can sometimes manage to get decent parts out of a poor mold with a good part design. Sometimes he can do the same with a good mold and a poor part design. But by the time he gets the mold, many times it is too late to actually "fix" the part.

As one might garner from this convoluted conversation, the plastic part, the injection mold design, the injection mold manufacture and the injection molding are interrelated.
